Now that there will be no Champions League action until February, Los Blancos have the luxury of just focusing on the domestic matters.
Real’s performance in the Primera Division has not been up to the standards expected from them.
This time it is not only their arch-rivals they have to worry about; in fact, their city-rivals, Atletico, have been in fine form since the beginning of this campaign.
Jose Mourinho’s men are currently five points behind Atletico. The distance between them and the Catalans is even worse as they are 11 points behind them.
That is why Casillas is trying to reassure the Real faithful that they haven’t taken their eyes off the silverware.
The shot-stopper commented on the current condition of his team and when it comes to the table standings, he believes they are far behind their rivals.
“The targets set for the end of the season are still there.”
“The pity is that perhaps we are at such a distance in the League from Atletico, despite having cut the deficit last weekend, and with Barcelona, which is even further away,” commented the goalkeeper to Madrid’s official website.
Moreover, despite their precarious situation in the domestic league, Real Madrid have managed to qualify from the 'Group of Death' as runner-ups and proceeded to the last-16 of the Champions League..
Remarking on their qualification to the knockout stages of the competition, the Spanish international believes his side will get a tough encounter in the last-16 of Europe’s most prestigious tournament.
“But, we made it through to the next round of the Champions League and we expect a tough rival in the Last-16, but by February there will be time to prepare.”
Finally, the veteran custodian stated that Real will try to reduce the gap between them and the two teams that are above them.
“Now we want to focus on the League and cut the lead of those ahead, and in the Cup move forward.”
The reigning La Liga champions sit on the 3rd position in the Primera Division.
