The Spanish goalkeeper spoke about how the goalkeepers are marginalised when the FIFA Ballon d’Or award is about to be given out and expressed how goal-scorers are considered to be above the rest.
Iker Casillas was one of those players who were considered as favourites to win the prestigious individual honour, also known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or.
However, with players like Andres Iniesta, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 running the race for the individual honour, there is no doubt that a player like Iker Casillas is left behind.
The three players mentioned above have shown the world that they are definitely a class apart.
While http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ronaldo-c31734 helped Real Madrid win the Spanish La Liga last season, it was Lionel Messi who scored more than 70 goals in a single season and guided his team towards Copa del Rey and FIFA Club World Cup glory.
However, Andres Iniesta was the best player for the Spanish national team which managed to win the Euro 2012.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 became the only side in the history of the game to have won the European title twice in succession, and no other team has managed to do it before.
However, that is also the reason why http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Iker-Casillas-c16815 was a favourite to win the prestigious honour as he did not only help his national team win the Euros in 2008 and 2012; he also helped them win the FIFA World Cup in 2010. Moreover, he was also the captain
of the Real Madrid team that won the Spanish La Liga in 2012.
When the players were short-listed, Iker Casillas was nowhere to be seen in the top three and Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta were the three players who were short-listed after voting.
While speaking about the individual honour, Iker Casillas said:
“I have to keep working and proving the work of a goalkeeper, who is often marginalised. I think most people enjoy those who score the goals than anyone else.”
Iker Casillas most recently helped Real Madrid qualify for the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League and is trying to help them win the prestigious European competition this season.
