Casino/hotel employment?

Question

I'm planning on applying for a bellhop position at a casino in detroit. I was curious if anyone knows a estimate on how much tips I would make a week. How much hourly?

Other than carrying bags to the guests rooms, what are some other tasks bellmans do?

What are some pros/cons?

What position in a casino do you believe would best suit me in your opinion?

Experience in:

ENTRY LEVEL ATM ENGINEERING-fixing atm machines, figuring out problems to update atm software and to improve communications.

Paper PRODUCTION- scanning surveys, figuring out ways for companies to make more $$$

Restaurant- bussing tables, worked for security for a little while

Sales Management- managed 25 sales people for a window cleaning business, sales were very good when I was managing

I love the travel industry and enjoy working with and helping people.

I understand the casino business is open 24/7. Would it be possible if I could work the 1st shift only? Or with no casino experience would they stick me on the worst shift possible such as the nights/midnight

Oh, Nick, Nick, Nick. You had me until the last paragraph.

I was a hospitality manager for 25 years. No, you can't work only the first shift, especially when you are just starting out. Next, you'll be asking for weekends off.

You do realize that the business is open 365 days, right? Meaning someone is working on Christmas Day, and New Year's Day, and Thanksgiving Day, every year. Yes, there is a good chance it will be you, especially at first.

Your restaurant and sales experience is great for the hotel/casino industry.

A hotel or casino might hire you to work the first shift (usually 7 am to 3 pm) on the front desk, if you are friendly and personable. But you would have to be available weekends and holidays. And you would never, never get promoted unless you are willing to work other shifts. Particularly in a casino, this is the shift when they need the fewest workers, and it's the shift that all the employees with more seniority want. Not a good combination for you.

Most bellhops just starting out work the 3 pm to 11 pm shift, because that's when most people check in. And, the more experienced staff members (read: people who have been with the company 20 years) work the am shifts.

Besides helping people with luggage, bellhops deliver items like extra towels, rollaway beds, etc. to rooms. They also generally run errands within the hotel or casino for the front desk and management.

A good bellhop can earn up to $100 per shift or more in tips, depending upon the property. The hourly wage varies a lot, but is not usually a great deal more than the minimum wage.
