Caspar Netscher steals victory in German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne
Alan McCabe’s British runner, Caspar Netscher, danced his way to an easy win in the German 2,000 Guineas, held at Cologne on Monday, May 28th. The 3-year-old was unsuccessful in the British version of the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket earlier this
month, but made no similar mistake this time.
He was slowly away in the beginning and despite going through a hard time in the middle, he kept making smooth progress. The rampant colt perked up his speed to chase the leader in the final stages of the event.
He was a treat to watch in the final 100 yards, as he unexpectedly gained a decent lead and after getting into command, the 19-5 chance showed no laziness till the finish line. Under Shane Kelly, McCabe’s sprinter seized the first position by one and a quarter
lengths.
P. Schiergen’s Irish challenger, Amarillo, tried his best to make things tricky for the champion, but remained unsuccessful. However, he did well to ensure the runner-up place by 1¼ lengths. Red Duke was lucky to finish among top-3, as the local superstar,
Energizer, missed the spot only by a neck’s distance.
The outcome would have been a huge setback for the 27-10 favourite, Tai Chi. The German star failed to make a decent start to the proceedings and as a result, lost his chances for the top prize. W. Baltromei’s trainee did a fine job in the end moment, but
that could earn him only sixth position in the list.
Enormously delighted over his charge’s fabulous win after an embarrassing defeat at Newmarket, McCabe said: "Everything went perfectly to plan today and it's fantastic. Things went awry for him in the Guineas at Newmarket, but myself and Shane said today
we'd drop him out last to try and make sure he gets the trip and ride him for a turn of foot.”
"He's actually probably ended up in front a bit soon, but Shane said he just took him there and I can't believe how well it went. He's in the Jersey Stakes but we might have a look at the Prix Jean Prat in France for him," he added.
