Casper Wells shines as Seattle Mariners defeat Oakland Athletics 4-2 - MLB Update

Seattle Mariners’ left-fielder, Casper Wells had an impressive day with the bat as he hit one home-run including two RBIs and went 1-for-3 with an average of .266 in the Mariners’ 4-2 victory against the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field, Seattle on August
2.
Mariners got off to a quick start as they posted their initial two runs at the bottom of the first inning to get a 2-0 lead. Brendan Ryan and Dustin Ackley both scored two collective runs when Mike Carp doubled off deep left-field. The next four innings
remained empty as the pitchers maintained their ideal line by tossing the mix-up of fast and curveballs.
In the third inning, Coco Crisp and Scott Sizemore both struck-out looking while at the centre-field, Jemile Weeks flied out. On the other hand, Ackley drove a triple-run shot towards right-field but Ryan and Carp both struck-out swinging and at the centre-field,
Ichiro Suzuki lined out to end the score-less third inning.
The batters failed to score runs until the fifth inning of the game as the Mariners’ centre-fielder Franklin Gutierrez singled off centre-field while at the right-field, Ackley flied out and Carp grounded out without adding even a single run to their score-card.
Mariners posted another couple of runs in the sixth inning to raise their lead 4-0. Wells struck a two-run homer (381 feet) towards left-field and Adam Kennedy contributed the final run for the Mariners. Athletics got off the mark during the seventh inning
by scoring just two runs and reduced their lead 4-2.
Ryan said, “On balls hit into the hole like that when the shortstop has to dive or backhand the ball, the second baseman often times is backing up first. If you get past first and second basemen you have second base open so I looked for it.”
Sizemore hit a two-run homer (423 feet) to centre-field and Eric Sogard added the last run for the Athletics. The Mariners’ starter, Felix Hernandez walked three and surrendered five hits with two runs in his six inning pitches. He was able to strike-out
nine batters and permitted two earned runs on his 113 pitches.
The last two innings were in favour of the pitchers as the batters struggled with their shots. However, the Mariners confirmed a 2-0 lead in a three-game series after a comfortable victory.
