Casper Wells shines as Seattle Mariners defeat Texas Rangers 4-3 – MLB Update
Casper Wells had a hit in the seventh inning on Wednesday, August 10 to help the Seattle Mariners win an apparently difficult 4-3 game against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark.
For the Mariners, it was Casper Wells who had the most important of hits to win the game on Wednesday, something that did not go unacknowledged even by the Texas Rangers’ manager. "If he would have come up with it, it would have been great," Rangers’ manager
Ron Washington said. "But that ball was smoked."
For the Mariners, Jason Vargas played a crucial role in containing the otherwise forward-looking and fierce Rangers’ offence.
"He was in control of the ballgame. He really bowed his neck and got it done," manager Eric Wedge said. "We really needed this one. To salvage this one and head home was big for us and Jason stepped up."
Wednesday’s game began with a strong inning of Derek Holland followed by that of Jason Vergas. Both the starters did not allow their rivals to score while Holland could not contain Trayvon Robinson on the top of the second inning.
Robinson grounded into fielder’s choice and Holland himself committed an error that gave the Mariners their first run. Jason Vergas, capitalising on the early lead that the team’s offence scored, remained unyielding when it comes to giving up runs.
As Holland came on the mound to pitch the third, Mike Carp homered to take up the lead to 3-0 for the Seattle. A night after Josh Hamilton hit the winning run, he homered in the fourth to score the first run for the Texas Rangers.
While Holland no longer allowed any run, Ian Kinsler hit a homer against Vargas in the fifth to level the score at a very crucial stage, bringing back the Rangers in the game and reviving their hopes to prevail once again.
But Casper Wells had a hit in the seventh inning against Koji Uehara of the Rangers to score the tiebreaking run, something that proved decisive for the Mariners. Vargas threw scoreless seventh, Jamey Wright went for a scoreless eighth and Brandon League
threw a scoreless ninth to turn the 4-3 lead into victory for the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners put in a tremendous effort as they managed to dominate most of the game against the Rangers. Seattle did a good job to restrict the Rangers’ potentially lethal offence from scoring runs during the later innings. Texas will be looking to improve
their performance in their next match-up. It will be interesting to see how the Mariners are able to carry their winning momentum forward.
