Castaway and Secret Circle work for the Rebel Stakes to be held at Oaklawn Park
Fourteen sophomore colts are expected to run in the 17 March, 2012, Grade 2, $500,000 Rebel Stakes at about 1 1/16 miles, and the participants turned in their works ahead of the Hot Springs major event next weekend.
10 sophomore colts out of 14 have already participated in both divisions of the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes last month, and are also among the lineup for the Rebel Stakes, including part of Bob Baffert’s contingent of Triple Crown hopefuls, who each won a division
of the Oaklawn Park’s Grade 3 Southwest Stakes are reported to fly into Hot Springs for the $500,000 event.
Owned by Mrs. John Magnier, and trained by Bob Baffert, the 3-year-old colt, Castaway is headed toward the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes. The Kentucky bred colt is the son of Street Sense, out of mare Priceless Storm by Storm Cat. Castaway broke his maiden this year
at sixth asking at about 1 1/16 miles at Santa Anita’s dirt course on 21 January, 2012.
The colt then was entered in a graded stakes race immediately, and he did not disappoint and downed the 1 mile long Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, defeating the likes of Jake Mo in second, and Reckless Jerry in third on 20 February, 2012, with the winning
time of 1 minute and 38.09 seconds.
Castaway turned in a work of six furlongs at Santa Anita Park’s main track, and covered the distance in 1 minute and 11 3/5 seconds, where over the same distance Bob Baffert’s other trainee, Secret Circle clocked the same time.
Owned by Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman, Kentucky bred, Secret Circle is much more accomplished than his stable mate, Castaway, and based on his past record, the son of Eddington is expected to take the Grade 2 Rebel Stakes in a huge field.
Secret Circle has won 4 out of 5 career starts, and the single blemish of his career was in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, where he finished a strong second to winner, Out of Bounds.
Out of mare Ragtime Hope by Dixieland Band, Secret Circle is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes.
