set the rod and reel up as for fishing,tie a 6oz weight on and set the drag,hold the rod up as if you were casting,wind the weight to the top and release(letting the weight drop) when it hits the ground the reel should have no over run,if it does adjust according,if casting for the first time just over tighten a little,good luck.I have been sea fishing for 50 years.
