Question:

Castles/Hotels in Ireland...?

I am interested in traveling to Ireland. I wanted to stay in a castle somewhere in the country. Is this possible? If so, what is the best place to stay. I would still like to be around a small town or community, but just not in a major city.

  1. The one and only time I have ever been to Ireland, I stayed in a castle not too far from the Shannon Airport.  It was called Ballyhannon Castle.  It has one tower and an extra house for living spaces, and it's surrounded by green fields.  It's truely beautiful.  It's in a small town called Quin, which is near a beautiful town called Ennis.  I think a lot of privately owned castles are avaible for renting, just like you can rent a house on the Jersey Shore.  You have the whole place to yourself; it's almost like going back in time and living in the past!

  2. There are many castles you can stay in Ireland, I have linked some sites below.

Where the best place to stay is a more difficult question, as in Ireland there are many beautiful areas, so I have included some tourist sites as well.

  3. The best ones I've heard of are, (please excuse spelling!)

    - Tara

    - Knocknashiga

  4. just to let you know that Ashford Castle is seriously expensive to stay in!  You could also try Castle Leslie in Co. Monaghan which is smaller and more intimate without all the modern trappings of phones etc but with a resident ghost (or so they say) and lots of interesting antiques.  Visit discoverireland.ie to look for places to go. It is also possible to rent out some small castles but this is also expensive. All depends on your budget!

    Enjoy.

  5. Ashford castle is prob the best place to stay, belleek castle in Ballina is lovely too! have a good time!

  6. Kinnitty Castle in Birr is quite nice - centre of the country (ish) and in the country but near to a town.
