Castro and Garza’s shaky performance cost Chicago Cubs against Colorado Rockies, 3-5: MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ short-stop Starlin Castro and starter Matt Garza both had a bad day and committed a lot of blunders as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-3 at the Wrigley Field in Chicago on April 25.
Garza was also disappointed with his error as he said, “We lost tonight because I couldn't throw the ball to first base. If I throw the ball to first base, it's still a 3-3 ballgame and we're still playing.”
Garza pitched a way-ward throw which gave the Rockies a leading run in the fifth inning while Castro made three errors in the second inning and gifted the game to the Cubs. It was first time in the Cubs’ roster that any player committed three mistakes.
Speaking to reporters, Castro said, “After I caught the ball it was kind of wet and I tried to hurry. It was just one of those things.”
Garza did not pitch well also as he permitted five runs on three hits in six inning pitches. He struck-out seven batters and giving no home run to the Rockies.
On the other side, the Rockies got full benefit of the Cubs’ errors. The Rockies’ opener, Dexter Fowler, had one walk and one run on a single hit. Troy Tulowitzki was impressive as he struck a grounder to reach on the bases. He connected one with the bat
and had 1-for-4. Todd Helton was not able to score any run on a solo hit.
Seth Smith took a single before the grounder of Jose Lopez and gave an opportunity to Tulowitzki to post a run. Lopez was hit out on first base while Smith on second. Chris Iannetta also hit straight down the ground and scored a single.
After winning the game, the Rockies’ Manager, Jim Tracy, had a huge ovation for his team. He said, “Our bullpen once again stepped up big time. Obviously the conditions were pretty tough to play in tonight. We handled the ball with the conditions of the
field. I don't think you can ask a group of players to handle the ball any better with the field conditions, as wet as it was.”
The Rockies’ starting pitcher Esmil Rogers was little bit scratchy with the ball as he allowed three runs on eight hits including three earned runs with four walks and three strike-outs in 5 1/2 inning pitches. Rafael Betancourt and Matt Lindstrom were the
two relievers who shined at the end of the game as they both struck out two hitters in 2 2/3 combined innings.
In the ninth inning, Huston Street was consistent with his disciplined pitching and threw scoreless inning for his eighth save.
