Question:

Cat's stools have blood in it?

Hi

My cat is very healthy, she's about 9 years old. Last night she (very unlike her) had an accident in the lounge (now thankful I chose wooden flooring instead of carpet!!) Her stools were very loose, almost runny, I also noticed it had a lot of blood in it, and what appeared to be blood clots. I've noticed she's eating a lot of grass lately, does anyone know what this could be? I'm a Nurse and if a patient had these symptoms I'd immediately suggest he visit his GP/take a stool sample. Should I do the same for the cat? (take her to the vet obviously!) Any comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rhianna

  1. Take your cats stool sample to the vets as soon as you can and ask advice there.  Best to be safe than sorry.

    Good luck.

  2. There are 2 reasons (that I know of) why cats have blood in their stool...one is parasites which means the cat needs to be de-wormed (only by a vet, never use the over-the-counter stuff its a waste of money and never works) or the cat may have had a hard time pushing the stool out and ruptured something internally which caused the blood ...to me it sounds as if it may be parasites because the stool is runny which is a symptom of parasites and if it was a large stool that she was having a hard time pushing out it wouldnt have been runny like it was...I would NOT allow the cat outside and get her stool to the vet for a check on it so if she needs de-wormed you can get the proper medication

  3. it might be kidney trouble, if you took a sample you can't go wrong cos its there if needed.

Blood in stools especially as the stools are loose can not be normal.

  4. I would take her to the vet if i were you!

  5. It could be many things...none good. So you do need to take her to the vet asap.

And as Sunny Lass said, it's vital that you take a sample of the loose stool to the vet with you. Try and take a sample with blood in it so they can test it.

    Best of luck!

  6. sounds like you already know the answer.  Take her to the vet as soon as possible, like you would recommend to one of you patients.  hope its something simple like worms.  hope everything works out good for you and your cat

  7. get in your car NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO!!! your cat's life could depend on it....

  8. While it could be anything, the most common cause of blood in the stool is worms.  First drop off a nice fresh stool sample at the vet - you can do that first thing tomorrow morning, generally they will let you drop it off without an appointment.  Have the vet check for coccidia as well as worms (they need a different test, and of course a differeent treatment).  If that's postive, then depending on when she was at the vet last, they may just prescribe a wormer for you to give her, or they may want to see her.

It isn't normal for a cat to have blood in it's stools - it may be common in cats that don't get proper care but that doesn't make it normal.

  9. It is almost definitely worms!

It is true that they eat gras to aid their digestion but sometimes they do it because of worms as well. The treatment you get for worms in the stores are usually not as effective as those that you get from the vet, so have your vet check up on her and give you good medication if it does turn out to be worms.

And yes a stool sample does sound like a good idea.

  10. Animals bodies function in pretty much the same way as humans. If there is blood in her poo, take her to the vet right away.

Don't wait for yes/no answers and decide to go with the majority.

I hope you're in the car and on the way to the vet.

    NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. If what appeared to be blood clots are in her stool, are actually clots she needs to see a Vet today. Grass is an emetic which animals eat to make them vomit, particularly if they have an upset stomach. Your cats symptoms indicate something more serious. Cats do not normally have blood in their stools.

  12. you can go to a vet and he will tell u the cure

    good luck
