my brother has bad allergies. we were thinking about getting a kitten. but i dunno if it will be good for my brothers allergies. normally it is pollen he is allergic to, but the cat dander may affect him. is there a way you can lessen the dander of the cat and hopefully allow us to get a kitten? thanks.

  1. When your brother was tested and found out he was allergic to pollen, the doctor probably eliminated cats and dogs or just the opposite. There is no way to lessen cat dander enough if you have allergies to them.

  2. get a cat with shorter hair, brush it often & bath is often (about once a month). Keep the cat indoors since it will pick up pollen in it's fur if it's let outdoors. Cats with lighter coats typically produce less dander than darker coats. Also, you might just take your brother to an animal shelter to see if he's even allergic in the first place.

  3. Siberian cats are hypo-allergenic - I have one and I'm generally allergic to cats but seem to have no problems with her!

Your brother should see an allergist - they can determine what he is/isn't allergic to and perhaps give him a shot to prevent his allergies from kicking in. A friend of mine, who is allergic to cats, but has one, goes to an allergist and it helps her a lot!

  4. You can buy brushes which trap the dander and allergens in your cats fur as you brush. I'm not sure how much they cost, but you can get them at Wall Mart. You can also get shampoo's, but giving a cat a bath is...uh...rather difficult.
