Question:

Cat Behavior Concern?

I have a friend who had taken her persian cat to the vet and ever since then the cat seldom gets out of the litter box. The cat is an adult cat and has been to the vet before. He just has never slept and layed in his litter box like he is now. He does comes out for awhile to eat but, goes right back in the litter box afterwards. This cat is the only cat in the house and there are no children around him. He also has 2 litter boxes that are cleaned out regularly. Any ideas?

  1. Get a dog.

  2. Cats like to choose a place to sleep that is safe, warm and comfortable. The positioning of the bed may be the reason for him choosing the litter tray. Is the bed in a place where he feels exposed,  in a room where he prefers not to be for some reason? Is the litter tray up high where he may feel safe, and the bed at floor level? If the litter tray is the covered variety, it could be that he feels safer or warmer in it. Perhaps you could buy him an igloo type bed or make a cover for his existing bed out of a cardboard box. Or is his bed in a draft or a colder part of the house? Find the cause by experimenting with the position of the bed and you should be able to find a solution. Alternatively, it may be just a habit he has learned if he were kept in a place where there was no alternative bed.  he will probably grow out of it once he realizes how comfortable other beds can be.

  3. This is not normal behaviour. The cat sounds like he could possibly be very sick. I would advise your friend,to take him back to the veternarian as soon as possible.

  4. Sounds to me like he is depressed.  At least he is eating though.  It is puzzling as to why he started behaving this way after the trip to the vet.  Did they put him on any kind of flea medication or any other medication?  I hope his shots are up to date and that he didn't catch any sicknesses from the vet.  How long has this been going on?  Typically cats only start acting weird like this when you bring another pet into the household.  I hope your friend's cat comes back around.

  5. I would take the cat back to the vet. How is the cat acting otherwise? Was this cat very social to begin with? Or did it hide from people? Was it's normal personality to sleep all the time in out of the way places?

If the behavior change is more drastic than just laying in the litterbox, (which warrants a trip to the vet by itself), I would get the cat back to the vet, ASAP.
