Question:

Cat Fleas ? ? HELP !!!!!?

My poor cats got big black fleas crawling on him. You can actually see them, he's so uncomfortable scratching and itching all the time. I thought fleas were small and white.

I booked him in to the vet but I work and he doesn't trust any one else putting him in the cat carrier so know one could take him. My wife went to the vet and they gave her some flea killer but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Does it usually take a while for the medicine to settle in?

I think i'l have to take a morning off to get him seen to. Any advice in the meantie would be really appreciated.

Thanks.

  1. don't listen to one of your answers as fleas don't drown! frontline spot on is the only thing i find really works! it goes on at the back of the neck and will take a little time to work but keep the fleas away you need to apply it every month to keep your cat protected. also if theres fleas on your cat there will be fleas in your home. for every 1 flea you see there are 100 more in your house (fact). so you should get a spray for your home to speed up the process for your cat. make sure you spray furnishings, carpets and cat bed really well! hope this helps

  2. Go to your vet and get a "spot on" type of flea treatment. You apply this to the back of the cat's neck, and it kills the fleas when they bite. (As a bonus, it kills ticks too).

You'll need to check that it doesn't confict with the treatment you've already used.

If that's been done already, you might need to wait a day or two for the effects to spread to the entire cat - again, ask your vet.

You'll need to treat the cat's bedding, your carpets, and any soft furnishings the cat has access to, as they will have flea eggs in them (sorry if this is grossing you out !)

Good news is that cat fleas don't infest humans (although they do bite sometimes, they won't live on us).

BTW fleas are the big black jumping ones, lice are the white ones.

  3. get a flea comb and comb them out. Make sure you do it in a bathtub to make sure you can see em when they ping off. Spray the tub with flea killer spray. They are a bugger to get rid of.

  4. give he cat a bath!

I know they hate water....but try and drown the fleas....give the cat some help...quickly.

water should be  just warm....not hot or cold of course.

Maybe put a little shampoo, in the water...and hair conditioner, also

swish and mix it all together...old towel to use, to dry the cat.

But try and give the cat a full-bath, not just a light one.....

    hope this helps.

  5. It really depends on what the vet gave them. I like Advantage Multi...it gets the worms too, repels and kills, etc. Fleas should start dying or trying to jump off and "flea" the scene within the hour easily. If they are still around, get a pet safe flea killer for your house. Spray down all furniture your cats hang out on, same with carpet...then vacuum the little suckers up. Also, if they go outdoors, use a a spray made for the yard to kill them. You must come from all angles when you get an infestation like that. I just went through the same thing!

  6. yes it can take a bit for the flea killer to settle in, but you only put it in certain places, and for the places where you didnt put it there could be countless eggs. so it would be best for you to go to the vet right away, hope your cat recovers quickly:)

  7. Okay my lovely animals ( cat and dog) seem to pick up fleas everywhere, ive tried everything, including the vet giving useless, expensive jabs..

I did a google search for something that might work.. and i found something called '4 FLEAS' by the company Johnsons.

The tablets cost about £8 for a box of 6 I think there is, but they actually work really really well, and you give them your pet when you see a flea.. it says it kills fleas in 16Min's, and it really does! Mine get a tablet every 3-4 days in a bowl of Tuna and I havent seen a flea in weeks!

Ive also brought flea igloos, it has a bright light at the top and a sticky floor which sticks the fleas which are attracted to the light, this also worked very well, but its quite an ugly thing.
