Question:

Cat Question...?

I read in a recent news story that vets claim that a healthy cat weighs between 10 and 12 pounds.

I have a 18 pound boy cat and a 17 pound boy cat. Neither of them is fat and they live a very active lifestyle. My vet has never indicated that they might be large cats and, to me, they are normal looking cats.

My cats are, according the to vet, in perfect health.

If the normal size for a healthy cat is 10-12 pounds, what is the probability that I would wind up with two that are so much larger than the average?

  1. Your cats are normal... just like people they come in diffent size and shapes.

    enjoy

  2. I have had cats all of my life and my male cat were always between 15 and 22 pounds.  Now the females were between 6 to 10 pounds, so maybe that is how they get their average.  But in my experience male cats are larger.

  3. All cats vary in shape and size, I have a fully grown calico who is 7 pounds.   My mom has a DSH who is 16 pounds and healthy.

If you vet says they are in perfect health than they are :)

  4. It's not just weight, but weight in relation to height.  If your boys are very tall and in good proportion, it's quite possible that they're a healthy weight and just much larger than the average cat.  "Average" cats do weigh 10-12 lbs, but cats can range anywhere from 5 to 25 lbs and be at ideal weight for their body size and breed.  Boys do tend to be larger than girls.

  5. I have a cat that weighs about the same weight as yours. The vet told me that as long as you can still feel their ribs when you pet them then they are healthy and not overweight. Not all cats are meant to be in the 10-12 lb weight range. Some are just larger breeds.

  6. This is a big cat.

Word on the street is that the picture is real too.

  7. I have a 29 lb cat and a 16 lb cat

The 29 lb cat is definitely fat

The 16 lb cat seems right to me, but sure doesn't need to get heavier

A 10 lb cat would be on the skinny side  in my thinking

    But Age matters too

    My big cat is 14

    The smaller one is 7

If either of them was 2 years old, and had either weight, I would be concerned

  8. 10-12 would be good for the average cat, most likely. Though even that seems a big on the heavy side for average.

But not all cats are average. My friends have a 16-lb black cat I nicknamed "the house panther". He doesn't have much fat on him at all. He's just a really big boy. Who squeaks instead of meowing. :-)
