2. Actually, you're WRONG. A cat CAN die from a hairball. The mass of hair in the stomach can get so large that it causes a blockage in the intestines which will lead to DEATH.

30 pounds??? What are you feeding this cat? That's clinically obese - hairballs are probably the least of your worries. This cat runs a REAL risk of having diabetes, heart disease or kidney disease with as overweight as it is. Get this cat to a vet for a check up and then change its diet. More than likely you're feeding it cheap dry grocery store food that's made mostly of corn. And I'm sure you'll leaving the bowl out all day long so the cat can eat all day if it wants to. Switch to a healthier MEAT based food and add canned food to its diet as well. And feed it only twice a day - once in the morning and once at night.

As for the hairballs the excessive shedding could be from poor nutrition. Is this a long haired or short haired cat? If it's long haired you should be combing the coat - not brushing it. Brushes pull out and break topcoat hairs and do little at removing the loose coats of the undercoat. A steel-toothed comb will gently remove the dead hairs of the undercoat and leave the topcoat hairs intact. Also add a hairball remedy to your cat's diet. There's foods you can buy with them already built in or you can buy the kind that comes in the tube.

As for her being lazy - OF COURSE SHE'S LAZY! She's OBESE! Your cat being 30lbs is the same as a human being about 400 pounds or more! Would you expect that person to be able to run around and play?

Edit: "diet" food? Let me guess. It says so on the bag and you bought it at the grocery store or WalMart, right? Really not sure why people ask for advice when you give them advice and they just shoot it down!

  3. If you go to a pet store ar any store that sells cat food and things like that. There are treatments you can buy that are fairly cheap thathelp with hair balls. Some go int he food and some go in the water they drink.

Hope this helps you. Good luck!

  4. I would check her food and consult her vet for a hair ball treatment. You can purchase dry food that has a hairball remedy in it, or even hairball treats. Additionally, if her food is low quality, that may add to her shedding because she is not getting enough vitamins.

My cat has the same problem with not passing hair balls, the vet recommend a cod liver oil treatment that kitty found very tasty and helped to lubricate his throat and digestive tract to pass them easier.

As far as laziness, it could be age or size related. Or she could just be naturally lazy. Some cats just are!

If the shedding is really a problem, you might want to think about either having her regularly groomed or investing in a power groomer (vacuum like brushing attachment) that removes more loose hair from the undercoat.

All in all, your vet should have some great suggestions for you and it shouldn't cost more than an office visit. Good luck with kitty!
