Question:

Cat Vaccinations?

Are they required? If I have an indoor cat... clean house, no other pets... does it need shots?

Is there a law in IL that says certain shots are required? If yes, which shots?

How can a cat get sick from diseases such as rabies and others?

  1. It is a law to get your cat vaccinated against distemperment. It is not a law but a good idea to get your cat vaccinated for rabies and also feline leukemia.

  2. In most  areas, rabies is required by law.  Animals get rabies when they are in contact with the saliva of an animal infected (bats, skunks, foxes, etc.).  That vaccine is required (although the chances of them getting it are low) because people can get it from them, there is no treatment, and it is fatal.

The other basic cat vaccine is the "distemper combo" which protects from several upper respiratory diseases and panleukopenia.  I would strongly recommend that your cat be vaccinated for this as a kitten and at least every 3 years.  These diseases come from other cats, but it is possible for you to carry them home on your shoes or clothes.

There are also vaccines for FIV and FeLV, but these are commonly given only to outdoor cats.  They are like AIDS in cats, and they often get them by fighting with other cats (bite wounds).

  3. Yes

  4. Speak to your vet about vaccinations and what they recommend getting. Alot of cat owners think that as their cats are indoor cats they are fine without vaccinations, however if you cat happens to get outside then its best they are vaccinated. Also if for any reason you need to board your cat the they will require vaccinations.
