We have a foster cat she is one year old whenever i clip her nails they split on both sides she acts like it hurts i do not cut the quick she does not bleed but i feel horrible cause it looks pain full but i have to clip her claws she gets a little aggressive around our other cats she has already scratched twice and made my other cat bleed twice we have tried those claw coverings and we have bought three packages that's supposed to last you like three months she gets them off the first day we put them on i need to know what to do not to hurt her while clipping her claws or another solution

  1. Very glad declawing isn't an option, well done.

If it does not bleed it should be OK. It's probably just that you're desheathing the claws - removing the dead outer layer. Cats usually do this themselves but sometimes they don't and it's necessary to do when you clip the claws. The claws are thick and wide before you do it, right? I often have to do this when I clip claws - kind of cut the nail sideways so that the outer layer splits and comes away. It's necessary otherwise dirt becomes trapped and the nailbed becomes infected.

Cats can be nightmares to claw clip regularly (as can dogs!). Bummer that you've got one of the difficult ones but kudos to you for persevering and not taking the lazy, selfish way out!

  2. I use one of those cheap nail files from the drugstore that has 2 sides to it, i use the softer side because it is less vibration. you have to do it a little more often than clipping but i find that it is a safe method and a bit lower stress once kitty is used to it. my cats purr now but when i first started they hated it, so just try it out and I hope it works well for you!!!

  3. You should buy a file that is safe for your pets.Maybe go to a pet store and ask them what kind of file would be safe for your cat since her nails split.Cutting is usually not so safe for pets.My dog's nails crack also when we cut them.We are going to buy a nail file for her also.

  4. The cat's claws are only shedding, it's natural

  5. CUT farther down the nail

cut from the side not the top.

You can always use a file... which will dull them.
