Question:

Cat constipated...can you help me?

Hey everyone what’s up. I have a really cool cat and he’s been constipated for about 2-3 weeks now (on and off). The first time I noticed it I took him to the vet and they gave him an e***a. This cleared everything out but he hasn’t been improving and so I took him in earlier today for another e***a.

Now the Vet is suggesting that they perform the next level procedure which involves putting my cat under full anesthesia and manually removing the poo from inside him. I’m looking at a bill of $200-$500 and I really hate to see my cat suffer like this.

So here’s what I’m wondering:

Have any of you ever experienced a situation like this with your pet or know of someone else who has? I’d really like to hear your story and what ended up happening with what you chose to do in the end.

Thanks!

P.S.: If you also happen to know of any remedies that have worked then please let me know ASAP.

  1. Hopefully, your cat is not suffering from what is known as megacolon.

You can give mineral oil with food, and there are things sold known as laxilose which will help the passage through.  Cisapride and psylium (Konsyl) has also been used.

Changing foods and adding more water sometimes if useful.

  2. if he's eating normally, try putting a teaspoon of cod liver oil on his food, that should "loosen" him up....

  3. omg

  4. Put clear karo syrup on its food...its a natural laxative, i have never tried it for a cat but it works for my dog!  and thats what the vet said to do!  also you should try feeding the cat wet food...

  5. put pancake syrup on his milk... he will poops 2morrow

  6. sprinkle a little medimucil in its food. continue for a few days and ur cat should b normal!

  7. When a cat becomes constipated, there is virtually nothing you can give by mouth that will clear the blockage (a lot of silly, old time home remedies have been posted). It must be removed from the other end, either by manipulation, e***a, or, in severe cases, surgery.

The solution is to prevent constipation.

This could be caused by the diet.

It could also be caused by dehydration. Sometimes, cats are prescribed Lactulose to be added to food which will keep the stool moist and alow it to pass normally.

In other cases, the muscles in the colon don't do their job properly (megacolon). Sometimes, prescription medications will help.

  8. Pumpkin worked for my dog. Some people have said canned pumpkin, but I bought people babyfood sqash and it worked. it REALLY worked. My dog pooped the next day like everything he didn't p**p in 4 days- Gross!

  9. I have never done this but it might work. Go to the store & in baby food by raisin pudding & feed it to your cat. LOL

  10. when my cat was constipated i just used pliers and dental floss

    or herbal laxitive

or a straw...i wont get graphic but you know what i mean

  11. try to get it to eat some tuna. that worked for mine.
