Cat cries / howls when he poops?

Question

sometimes when my cat uses his box to p**p, he cries really loud, sometimes in a deep voice, almost like a howl. he just started doing this about a year ago, at first i thought it was funny, but now im thinking he might be in pain? or constipated?

is this normal? should i do anything? he is a healthy 12 year old cat otherwise, should i just forget about it?

i agree with guest6866.  Samething happened with my 7 yrold sphinx.  He died of cancer. Go to the vet!!!!!!!!!

Had zero idea cats could be such pains in the a**e with litter use. Inheirited a female cat from our daughter a couple years back and while shes been to the vet numerous times to try and get a handle on why she pefers pooping on a rug / carpet rather then the litter box. Have tried different litter material, box placement, size, diet, urinary checkups. Yesterday morning yowled and pooped on a rug in front of the door, this morning pooped in front of the bed. Luckily she pee's in the litter box. We have rooms with carpet doors closed, rooms with area rugs / rugs covered with plastic. Sure miss our Yorkie!
