My cat has loved going in the water since she was 1 years old. We let her swim around the bath tub and when we went doen to the lake she loved the water there too. But me and my wife just got an inground pool installed and everytime my cat goes outside she is so drawn to the pool. everytime she would jump in, we would clean her cuz we thought that the chlorine in the water would kill him. My question is, is the chlorine in pool deadly if a cat drinks it or cleans itself after swimming?

  1. Aw, c'mon, call the vet!  Don't get the advice here.  And ask what to do if it is a problem.

  2. it wont hurt your cat also your cat wont hurt you when you bath it.

  3. Can the cat get itself out of the pool? That's my main concern.

  4. As per humans, chlorine will most likely only harm with an allergy. I dont think you will have any problems. I would be more worried about the cat drowning!!

I hope the cat will be ok.

    Jane.

  5. The chlorine won't hurt your cat, the same way that it won't hurt you.

I would be concerned that the cat could jump in, but then could not get out.

Can you find something to float on the water that the cat could get onto and then teach him to use it?

Maybe another possibility would be to install a "cat ladder" (carpeted board) extending into the water from the side of the pool.  And, of course, teach him to use it.

  6. Its great that you are considering your cats health so seriously.  Just to be sure, I suggest that you call your vet and ask this question. They are the experts.  I personally dont think it would be good for your cat and would discourage it.  Chlorine is poisonous and Im thinking it could be a carcinogen.

  7. i think it should be ok. ive seen animals like dogs and cats (mostly on home clip shows) swimming in pools and they seem okay..... its probably cause a skin irritation more then anything if the chlorine is to strong....but i think you would notice this and then take necessary action from this.

my dad had a 23 year old cat that loved swimming, swam all its life and died of old age so i wouldn't worry too much about it drowning.... as long as you keep an eye on him. my dads cat swam in a polluted lake full of oil and lived.....he just lost all his fur for a while :(. but it didn't kill him so im sure chlorine will be fine!!!! :)

Perhaps there is such a thing as safe chlorine levels.
