Question:

Cat isn't gaining weight?

I found this stray over a month ago starving. Took him to the vet after having him for 2 weeks, get him neutered and weighed. He had put on some weight at that time and came out at a little over 9lbs.

Vet says it's a good weight for him, but when you pet him, you can still feel his bones poking out. I pet my two cats, and it's different. They feel healthy. Y'know?

He doesn't have any parasites. He's very active and he does eat.

What could cause him not to be gaining anymore weight?

  1. hey. thanks for ur answer.. i have the same going on with 2 other cats of mine. my vet gave me a vitamin syrup for them, to be given everyday. but they havent put on much.. i guess they take more time to get fat.

  2. Is the face longish? If so than your cat might be mixed with siamese, or some other oriental cat breed. Those breeds are naturally thin. Compare it to a greyhound in the dog world.

  3. He may just be naturally thin.

I have four cats, in varying sizes. Sims is quite large (Maine Coon), I mean, good luck feeling any of her bones. Dommie on the other hand, while an appropriately voracious eater, does have bones that stick out and I know for sure that he's healthy (and actually crying for food as we speak).

I'd try not to worry about it.

  4. Perhaps he's catatonic...

  5. My vet says that my cat is too fat. She is only 4.2kg but has a bit of belly. Look I love fat cats but I do not want to hear from vet that i need to watch i feed her. I think you are lucky in that you cat seems naturally thin.
