I have a six month old male cat who has been urinating in our house since he was a kitten.

We've tried multiple litter pans, different litter types, we've used a black light to find the spots and cleaned with different pet cleaners (Nature's Miracle & Dumb Cat), we had him neutered at 4 months incase this was a territorial thing, and we tried keeping him locked in a room with his litterpan for a few weeks to get him used to using just that. Vet treated him for a UTI just incase also.

Recently he decided to go in between our couch cushions & we realized he had done it before (other areas of the couch stunk like urine when the cushions were removed). This is in addition to all of the areas on the carpet he's used.

I don't want him in the house anymore and shelters won't take him because they say they're full. I love him but can't take it. We live in a busy area & if he goes outside, I'm sure he'll get hit.

  1. Is he neutered?

  2. I would suggest to read The Cat Psychologist.  More than likely the cat is not happy about something.   Cats usually pee on things to get back at you... he may not like where the box is located, the type of litter, may not like the new routine you have...  If you read the cat psychologist, it may give you some ideas on why your kitty is doing this.

I'm so sorry you have this issue.  If you want to get rid of him, you can put an add on Kijiji.com and someone may take him....

Good luck, but i do suggest that you read that book.

  3. their are a few more things to try, there is a product called cat attract, it is an additive for the litter box, and it works well, had the same problem a few years ago, and the is a plug in, of feline pheromones you can use also...have your vet culture his urine, UTI may still be present, and he associates pain with the litter box , he may have not gotten rid of the infection, that's why we culture...

  4. Boys like to mark their territory, unfortunately. Fixing him might solve the problem. How busy an outside? Cats are smarter than you think. If he has a playmate he can learn what NOT to do outside. He might want to be outside--might fare better, and he might stop marking. Definately get him fixed though.

  5. If he's six months you could get him nuetered Im sure that would help. Also make sure the house is spotless...(not saying your house is messy just saying cats tend to pee on anything if theres something on the floor or a weird smell around). I've heard males are harder to potty train though. You might try locking him up at night in a room that doesnt have carpet and put his litter box in there, he may meow a lot but he be somewhere where he may be forced to use the bathroom. I have two little kittens both which are about three months old or so. They had a few accidents but they've started using their litter box after I did those things.

  6. This is a very sad situation.  All I can is that if you had a child and he peed in the house like your cat (kids do that), would you get rid of him?  Of course not! I think you need to be just a bit more patient!  He's still a kitten!  If he's still doing this after a year then you have a problem!
