Cat nails/scratching. Man, it really hurts when Noah hurls off and swipes my arm. He's just playing, but...

...but it really hurts! I actually have scars on my arm now from him. The worst thing he's ever done was when I was sitting at the computer, and he wanted to sit up with me, so Noah jumped up on my arm which was laying on my lap, lost his balance, and dug his nails BIG TIME into my arm. What can I do? I can't just alltogether have him learn not to sit up with me, because I love it when he does. I just need a solution to the nails. Yes, I've tried trimming them, and have, but he really doesn't like it and he tears me up in the process. Let alone, the fragmented fingernails are pretty close to as bad as having full fails.

My other problem is also him exercising or pulling his nails on stuff. He pulls up the carpet!! I have a scratching post, and he's got that thing into threads, but lately he hasen't been using it!! It's still in-tact and he's still able to pull his nails with it, but.. he doesn't. Mabye he like pulling horizontally opposed to vertically now? I don't know.

Any suggestion onto what I should do in each of these scenarios? As I always say, and still adhere to: All help is greatly appreciated!

  1. Definitely Soft Paw are the best thing next to sliced bread. I had the vet put them on my cats front paw which cost 20.00.  They lasted nearly 3 months. Best 20.00 I spent.  After they fell off, I didn't have them put back on as she doesn't scratch anything but her post now.

  2. Since he likes to scratch horizontally, you can purchase this product , which is a corrugated cardboard filled with catnip some cats tend to enjoy it. Also try softpaws   Good Luck!!!!!

  3. Put catnip on his scratching post. You can buy Soft Claws and put them on him to help with the claw marks.

  4. Train him to use the scratching post!

  5. Great News!!! Most vet clinics will trim your cats nails for you, and they should be able to do a pretty good job. THEN, they can or you can apply Soft Paws which are soft plastic covers that you basically super glue over their actual nails. They last about 6 weeks and work great. They should have them available at pet stores, and our vet clinic carries/applies them for you. And, scratching is a natural instinct, as far as the carpet goes. I hope this will help you and your kitty out!!! P.S. they're not too expensive either.
