Question:

Cat not purring, not meowing, but swallowing loudly and often?

I posted a question on here a few days ago stating that my cat seemed to just be slowing down with old age and I was curious how to keep her comfortable.

After spending a lot of time with her the past couple days, I realized a few symptoms she has and I'm not sure if this is old age or if something is wrong with her. I've made a vet appoinement, but it's not until next week. I was hoping for some educated guesses in the meantime.

Here are her symptoms:

She's not purring, even when clearly comfortable.

She's not meowing, and she used to be VERY vocal.

Everytime I think she's about to start purring, she instead swallows very loudly.

She's actually swallowing a LOT, loud enough for me to hear her from across the room. She is NOT coughing/hacking/throwing up though, so I don't believe there's anything obstructing her breathing.

She's drinking a lot of water, but not eating her food (not even her wet food.)

Any ideas on what might be ailing my beautiful cat?

Thanks a million for any suggestions/advice.

  1. Maybe he has a bump or sumthin in his throat..or he could have a sore throat like people? I dunno just thoughts.*educated guess*(I dont like to talk when i have a sore throat) D:

  2. I WOULDN'T WASTE MY TIME AND TAKE HER TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY, EVEN IF IT IS NOT YOUR VET.

I COULD BE A TUMOR OR CYST IN HER THROAT, I COULD BE SOMETHING CAUGHT IN HER TRACHEA, IT COULD BE AN INFECTION IN THE LYMPH NODES IN HER NECK.

I WOULDN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT............

  3. I'm not sure what might be ailing your cat :( I'm sorry.  Next week is a long time to wait to get in though.  Can you call your vet and ask them if they can recommend a different vet you can go to that may be able to get you in sooner.  Or ask friends or family where they take thier animals and see if there is anyplace that could see your cat sooner.

  4. hi my cat had simular symptoms last week, drinking a lot not eating seemed a lot more tired than usual, took him to the vets he had very low pottasuim levels, turned out he had a urine infection, few meds and days later hes back to his usual self, eating me out of house and home and only drinking his usaul amount, take her to the vets get it checked out safest thing,  ps i thought twixs symptoms were just old age, my vet said old age is not an illness, drinking more and not eating are symptoms of an illness not old age,

  5. Drinking a lot of water makes me think either diabetes or kidney problems. If she's not eating, that's not a good sign. When my old cat stopped eating, she lost weight rapidly, and ended up having liver failure. The vet said to force feed her, which didn't end up to well. I would try and get your appointment moved up, or find a clinic that takes walk-ins just to be on the safe side.

  6. TAKE HER TO THE VET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!

  7. throw it in the trash, i hate cats

  8. Honey I Have No Idea Just Wait And Take Her To The Vet
