Cat owners, is this normal for a sick cat?

My cat has been, what I believe to be sick with a cold, but it is a little disturbing. I didn't grow up with cats so I don't know if this is normal. He is coughing, it sounds like a hair ball but he will go on and on for a minute or two at a time. I have given him hairball control treats and have fed him butter because I heard that helps and it is not a hairball. Has anyone had a sick cat that coughs? His nose sounds congested too. I would just like to avoid an unnecessary vet visit if it's a common cold. Thx in advance!

  1. There is a serious cat disease that can affect the lungs.  If your cat has not been vaccinated against it, he could have caught it.  Or he could have an upper respiratory infection.  A trip to vet is probably in order, it is a necessity, not unnecessary.

  2. Sick with a cough?  Could be pneumonia.  Sounds like a vet visit is in order, as pneumonia's easily treatable with the right antibiotic, but can be dangerous if left untreated.

  3. i dont think that cats get colds. I am sorry to tell you this but if you dont take him to the vet. He may...{-(

  4. Usually cats with a common viral infection (or cold as we term it) don't cough.  That would indicate some congestion in his lungs and I think a vet visit is not "unnecessary" but rather essential.
