Cat peeing outside litter box?

I have two cats both adults, one of my cats has been peeing outside of the litter box for a few months now. I added a 2nd litter box and took him to the vet at petsmart for a checkup, vet gave me some antibiotics to give for two weeks, at first it seemed to work but i think he has gone back to the original areas of the basement to pee...I don't know what to do now can anyone think of anything else that i have not tried? or is there a product at petsmart that will get rid of the smell and stains so he does not keep returning to the same spots...

  1. Hi Richard,

Cats that begin peeing outside the litter box is a sign that something is wrong. Cats are fastidious about their toilet habits and when they stray from their normal habits, it is something to explore.

It was good that you added a second box. With two cats, this is a great idea.

Did your vet take a urine test or blood test to learn just what kind of "infection" your cat might be dealing with? Without those tests it is difficult to know just what medication is appropriate, or, in fact, what is causing the behavior.

He may still be harboring bladder stones, which do not always show up as infection. A urine test is the only way to find out if this is the cause. I would take your cat back for further examination, which is more thorough.

You are right that you must get rid of any remaining urine odor. There is an excellent product called  Simple Solution. Any product you use must contain enzymes which neutralize the urine odor. Using a black light which you can obtain at any petstore as well, is also important as it shows precisely where the urine spots are located.

Additionally, if you have the litter boxes in the basement, your cat may not find the location to his liking. Try changing it to one that is closer to where he spends the most time.

Good luck with your cat, and I hope you can get to the bottom of the problem.

  2. I would suggest taking your cat back to the vet just to make sure there's no kidney infection, urinary tract infection, etc.

If there is nothing medically wrong with your cat, try adding a couple more litter boxes & put them on the spots your cat has been peeing on.  If that's where your cat wants to pee, make it so that he can do that without getting in trouble.  Scoop them daily.  Maybe your cat's just going through a picky phase.

This may be tricky.  (A webcam helps).  Watch your cat when he goes to the litter box.  Your other cat isn't ambushing him on his way in or out, is he?  If cats are afraid of what's going to happen when they come out of the box, they'll just stop going in the box altogether.

    Good luck!
