Question:

Cat proofing my room? doesn't sound like a reptile question but it is.?

See, I keep my many reptiles in my bedroom, which has always been fine, as the cats don't pay any attention to them and hardly ever come into my room. Since a couple of months ago I started breeding my own mice to feed the ever growing collection of snakes and lizards, the cats all of a sudden got interested and keep trying to get the mice even though they are safe. The mice are getting scared, so I want to stop the cats getting in. But the problem is I live in the attic room, which is acessed by a ladder - no door. How on earth can I stop the cats getting in all the time?! Please help! :)

  1. There are sprays you can spray on plants to keep cats from eating them mabey you can try those around the entrace of your room. I'd also try dosing them with a new catnip filled toy to distract them.

  2. dont keep the mice and snakes in the same room...it will stress the snakes out as well as stress the mice out since they both have a really good sense of smell.

  3. Is there anyway of covering the hatchway? Or is the ladder removable?

If you block or remove the access the cats cant get up there

  4. I would suggesst getting a peice of plywood and nail a strip of tough fabric in it. When you are coming down the laddermove the piece of wood over VIA the fabric. Works For Me!

  5. I have had the same problem with a doorway that had no door.  There are a few things to try.  First obviously put the mice in a place that is not accessible for the cat, second get two or three spray bottles.  Leave them in various places for you to grab as a deterrent for the cat.  Spray away I say.......There is a product that almost all pet sections in stores like Wal-Mart and such have.  The one I use is called Kitty B-Have.  It is a spray that is suppose to sprayed on things like curtains and couches to prevent cats from scratching.    It stinks.  But only in the immediate area.  It does not travel through the air.  The thing is thought I had to spray my doorway once a day.  It took about a month and a half before the cat would stop entering my room.  between the water bottles and spray.   I used squirt guns rather than spray bottles. None of this is illegal nor does it hurt the cat.   Yelling at the cat in an angry tone as you squirt it helps send them message.
