Question:

Cat puking after she eats her food?

Our female cat is puking after she eats. She is approximately 5 years old and roughly 12 pounds. She does this on a semi-regular basis. I have not changed the food recently~but I did regard that reason (new food) as a theory for her behavior. Sometimes the food doesn't even get digested~other times it's mixed with hair (yes, I know~hairball). Please help!

  1. my cat does the same thing.  hair ball formula doesn't change anything. He mostly does it at night when he has a "snack."

I just clean it up and make sure that the food portion is small since he will practically breathe in the food.

  2. When my cats eat too fast and don't digest the food I've seen this happen.  Gryffindor used to do this often so I now only put 1/4 cup of food out in am and 1/4 cup in pm (recommendations based on weight of my cats) and they seem to slow down eating knowing it has to last them and they will get fed again.  My kitten Imhotep has had runny poo issues since I got him, had dewormers and the works, and finally vet said he might just have a sensitive stomach.  Your cat might just have a sensitive stomach too, just opposite of my kitten.  You can also try switching to hairball control food if not already using, just switch slowly.  If not puking every time she's probably fine but keep an eye on her and if you worry too much get her to the vet.  Better safe than sorry!

  3. Some cats (especially cats that were strays once) eat very fast and throw up afterwards. Also some cat food may disagree with her. Try the type that is for sensitive stomachs.

Better yet, talk with the vet. They know good advice about nutrition.

  4. Eating too fast and too much at one time and of course the hairballs. Give her a hairball remedy, give her smaller portions of food at each meal and see if that helps.

  5. what brand of food is she eating? maybe she has digestive problems. if so, get her specially formulated food. I recommend royal canine.

  6. One of my cats had the same problem. with her it was due to her eating all her food way too fast. Since I dont have time to feed her small amounts throughout the day I started mixing about 1/4-1/2 cup of water with her wet food. I don't really know why but her puking stopped.
