Cat question!?!? PLease, I'm writing a story! And I need help!?

Question

What is the professional way to say,

'the sent glands in the top jaw of the cats mouth?' But shorter please. I'm writing a story similar to the Warrior Books, by Erin Hunter. And I'd like to know what its called for it.

oh, you mean 'scent'!

The sensory glands, I guess. Or taste buds?

...well in warrior cats they just say:

'he opened his mouth and smelt the forest scents flood into his mouth'

and if you repeat that people usually get the idea that they can smell through there mouth? (I'm not very sure i just wanted to try and be helpful!) if your a warrior cats fan join treeclan!! on yahoo groups, lol

Well, you might want to say at the start the cat stretched his mouth open to smell _____ through the glands in his mouth.  Then later on you can just say that the cat smelled _____ by opening its mouth.
