Cat scratch a possum one time?

My cat scratched a possum one time and then I quickly put her inside. She has has rabbies shot but I found out from vet that her vaccination has expired.

can a cat catch rabies from scratching a possum on side of face 1 time? the possum did nothing back

  1. My ferals eat and share food with the coons and possums all the time. A little skunk comes up as well. :)

    I wouldn't worry about it.  


  2. Any mammal can carry rabies but it is extremely unlikely that an opossum will have rabies. I actually looked it up because I had thought that they couldn't carry rabies at all! But it is highly, extremely unlikely that the animal had rabies.

  3. As far as I know you can only get rabies if you are bitten or saliva enters an open wound.  As long as your cat did the fighting and the possum didn't bite you're fine.
