Question:

Cat spay gone very wrong

I had my cat spayed eleven days ago. She has done great, she didn't even l**k the stitches and yesterday morning I found her laying on the floor with her intestines hanging out. I rushed her to the vet and she is doing better (thank God!). I brought her to the same vet, because I was in shock and could barely think. I have talked to all my friend and family as well as looked it up online, and everyone and everything is telling that it was the vet fault that this happened. They didn't stitch her correctly or something. Now I am questioning whether to ever go to the vet again or even pay for the fix (everyone has been saying that I shouldn't)? I was wondering if other people would give me their opinions. Thanks!

  1. First off, I'm glad your kitty is doing OK!

That must have been a horribly experience for you and the cat. I'm glad you were there to act quickly and get her to the care she needed.

I saw this happen one time before, but it was with a female dog. She did fine with her spay and never touched her sutures. She was being bordered with us (I worked as a Vet Tech at the time). We came into work one morning and she had torn all her sutures out (external and internal) and her intestines were exposed.

The vet was one of our best and I had assisted the spay, I know he had sutured both internal and external sutures. The dog was OK, we took her to emergency surgery and she did fine in recovery.

So it was a horrible indident, but it wasn't anyone's fault.

I can't speak in the case of your cat obviously, but yes this can happen tho I would believe it to be very rare. If you don't feel confident with this vet, then by all means change to another.

I'm glad your kitty is OK and hope she continues to recover well. If you have any doubts, take her to another vet and get a second opinion. Speak with the vet directly and perhaps they will reduce the cost of the spay because of the problems afterwards.

  2. OMG,that is terrible! It should not have happened,as most vets put in two rows of internal sutures as well as the external ones. The internal ones slowly dissolve and the cat's body absorbs them.Your vet must not have done a very good job,or else there is something wrong with the cat's ability to heal.Either way,I'm glad you found the cat in time, and this time, wear an e-collar on her until her sutures are out,and ask the vet to use tissue glue as well and bandage her belly, too. And,no you should NOT have to pay for it!

  3. that sounds awful i feel so sorry for you

i would go to a different vet

  4. That is absulutely horrendous.

Poor kitty. Sounds like you should change vets. I have never heard of this happening and have had numerous cats spayed. As a matter of fact I dont think the inscisions should have been so large as to allow her intestines to hang out.

I suggest you call a veterenary college and ask their opinion of what could have happened and ask them where you can lodge a complaint against the vet.

Definately do not pay for the her present stay and consider asking for a refund for the spaying.

  5. Id sue! Im so in love with all my cats! When my first two got spayed..they came home drunk lol it was halarious.

  6. Find out exactly what went wrong; if the vet is at fault, you could probably file a lawsuit against him.

  7. NEVER TAKE HER TO THAT MURDERER VET AGAIN!

You're poor kitty could have died!

Thank god you got her to the vet in time, even if it was the same vet. But still the vet should have payed closer attention to what the h**l they were doing. No no, don't sue, only sue if your kitty died. I hope she does better, the poor thing =[

  8. although spaying is a common operation its still open surgery, there is nothing to say the stitches wont open and things like this happen.  If you are really in doubt about the care she received then best to get a second opinon from another vetenary practise, if they agree with your concerns then you would be right to take action against the vet that did the operationl.  Good luck I hope your cat gets well soon :o)

  9. h**l no you don't pay. You need to tell the news you horrifying story to help keep that from happening to another animal. They should loose there license to practice. I'm disturbed by your story. You need to stop this from happening again
