Cat sucking on blanket

Hey my 2 and a half month old cat always sucks on my blanket. I'll be trying to sleep and he jumps up and starts sucking away and purring, forcing me to pet him or he just meows. Is there any way to make him stop? Keeps me up for a while sometimes.

  1. Your kitten is very young and is still displaying the same behaviour as it would if he were with its mother. At this age he will still be very needy of parental attention. As he gets older you may want to try discouraging the sucking by gently grabbing him by the loose skin around his neck, while supporting him with your other hand under him and move him away, as that is what his mother would do. I would recommend you put up with his attention-seeking for now, he will likely mature and become more and more independent.

  2. Your kitten is being affectionate. While most cats grow out of this, yours still finds the suckling behavior comforting. There is nothing wrong with him. What he is exhibiting is known as dry sucking. The sucking behavior reminds him of nursing with mom. You can't really make him stop though, so allow him to find comfort and hope that it will go away by itself and he grows older.
