I decided to keep the stray cat I found over a month ago, no one seems to want him and there's too many free kittens right now.

How many cat trees and scratching posts should I have for 3 cats? They're starting to scratch everything like they don't have enough. I have one tree, a post, and a scratching rug

  1. You can have as many as you like but cats tend to be annoying and use the stuff you don't want them to scratch.

I'd say what you have is enough, but you can buy scratch deterrent from pet shops to stop them from scratching various things, and you can also buy plastic covers for chair legs/sides, to stop them from scratching where you don't want.

  2. Because part of the desire to scratch is to mark territory, both visually and with the scent from their claws, each cat should have at least one scratch item of their own.  If you can provide them with 2 each, in different locations that would be perfect.  You might find that they have different preferences for what they will scratch.  Our male cat uses a sisal post and a heavy tree branch, whereas our female refuses to use anything other than sheets of corrugated cardboard.
