Cat vomiting alot, don't know why

okay so my cats been throwing up frequently for the past 3 or 4 days...like several times a day. I took him to the vet 2 days ago and they gave him fluids, took some blood, and sent him home. he didn't feel any obstructions or lumps or anything out of the ordinary at all. I found out today that they did a CBC? and found out he was slightly dehydrated...duh.

the vet also gave me some m/d canned food since all we feed our animals is dry food.

my cat is acting pretty normal, he acts like he wants food, but when given food doesn't eat that much, and will a short time later throw it up...

does anyone have any suggestions as to what this could be? he's not even 8 years old, he's neutered, up to date (as of 3 weeks ago) on all his shots and was given his first ever dose of Revolution at that same time as well.

He's lives indoors at all times, and we only have one other indoor cat, who is also up to date on shots.

please please help me

  1. It could be Irritable Bowel Disorder or constipation.  Has he been using the litter box regularly?  Have there been any changes in the household lately that could be affecting him at all?  And what did the vet tell you?

  2. it sounds like hairballs, mine does the same thing. get a tube of hairball rmedy at the market, Put a dab on his nose, he'll l**k the rest from the tube. let him have about 1/2 teaspoon. It'll settle his stomach

  3. Definitely talk to your vet about it but in the meantime cat proof everything.

IF he's a house cat they can get a little dumb... From personal experience they will eat almost everything, especially tomato's. Check he's not l*****g anything like furniture because it may have something on it. Basically just watch him as much as possible.

Also cat treats are really bad in large quantities, so if you're giving him those then stop until you figure out the problem.

  4. The vet covered the basics, the tests eliminate certain things that could cause this, and a physical exam eliminates certain other things as well--so it wasn't a waste of time.

Dehydration is common when anyone or anything throws up, fluids come up that the body would have used, this puts a strain on the system.

Canned food may be easier on the cat's stomach, it's not unreasonable to go to the store and get several of the 6 or 12 ounce cans for the cat to eat for a while.

If the cat can't keep ANYTHING down for long (long enough to digest) then he needs help since he won't be getting any nutrition and can start loosing weight fast.  I don't think the revolution or the shots have anything to do with this as they were given 3 weeks ago.

Did the vet say anything about organ function?  A problem with the pancreas can cause a cat to throw up repeatedly, as it's interfering with the stomach's ability to digest (this is a dangerous thing for a cat).  I'd also ask about mouth ulcers and blockages in the throat.

Was the cat able to get into anything in the cupboards?  Poisons for lawn treatments, car grease, antifreeze, ant poison, garden chemicals, etc. can cause problems with any animal that eats them or gets them on the fur--toxic reactions do have vomiting as a main symptom.  What type of blood tests did the vet do?  Did he say what he KNOWS is not causing the vomiting?

You need to talk with the vet to find out what they eliminated as possibilities and then ask them what causes are still possible that may be doing this to your cat.

You also didn't mention if the vomiting is being done only after eating food, if it's clear, frothy, yellow, brown sludgy kind, all semi digested food, or has a hairball in it every time.  Each of these is caused by something different.  If the cat still isn't eating much, you need to consult with the vet again and update him on the condition of your cat.

  5. Vet. Now.

Edited to say: That's all that needs to be said. If your vet doesn't know why your cat's vomiting then how could we know. If the vet you're taking him to can't help, then try another vet. Either way, asking us doesn't help your cat.

  6. they should take an x-ray of him because they can't always feel if there is something in his stomach.
