Cat wants to leave kittens after giving birth?

My mom's cat just had kittens yesterday afternoon, now she wants to roam around the house away from them. They've been in a separate bedroom with food, water, litter, etc. Do cats normally stay right by there young's side for a few weeks?

  1. My cat had kittens when she was 10 month old, she kept leaving them but then we realised that she wanted us with her as well ( i ended up on the sofa all night with my hand in the cat box!!) She kept leaving the kittens and then going back to them like she didnt really know what to do, i rang the vet and they said as long as she was feeding them it was ok , i think she just wanted a bit of time out , you need to keep your eye on her and see she is feeding them or they will die , kittens need feeding at regular intervals and cant go too long without mum or you will have to step in, don't pick up the babies , leave her to it for at least 24 hours so she gets used to them , its quite a shock for cats to have kittens when they are so young and they need time to bond, Armani ended up being a fantastic mum we were so proud of her as you are of yours i am sure, i hope this helps but if you are unsure just ring your vet and they will always advise, take care and good luck xx

  2. i think she rejected them. so ur gonna have to feed them formula take them to the vet and ask what kinda u should give to them. mothers sometimes rejects there animals for no reaso, the just do

  3. it could be rejection or your cat isnt used to them. but if your cat is to young to have them make sure you keep a good eye on them.

we dont want any kitten funerals

make sure you feed the kittens formula and keep them warm

if your cat is willing to feed her kittens by herself let her.

    good luck!!!

  4. Mommy cats often move their kittens from the place they gave birth, especially if they aren't being left alone.  (Too many lookers and touchers?)  Also the smell of birth attracts predators and it's her natural instinct to protect her babies if she thinks it still smells too birth-ee.

She's fine.  She still has a life and her old figure back.  Give her plenty of water and food and pet her when she's away from them and tell her how proud you are of her.  She'll go back to tend to them when she knows the time is right.  Give her some space and keep the hordes away from the babies for a while.  Don't pick them up especially for a while.  She needs to feel confident.  Cats can't count and she doesn't know if you are taking them so she'll hide them  better to avoid the risk.

    Hope this helps

  5. some will get up and walk around , some will leave them if they are sick, , some just have em an leave em?

  6. when my cat had kittens she was only 9 months old. for the first couple weeks she was kinda freaked out by the kittens, she would stray away from the babies but she would come back. and then she understood. i think you should call your vet and ask about it and maybe get an appointment for her and bring in the kittens too. otherwise ask your vet what kind of formula you should give them. and schedule feeding times, you may have to wake up to feed the babies. Best Wishes

  7. I had a cat who took excellent care of her kittens, but sometimes just needed to be away, and would wander away for a little while, but always come right back if another cat looked like it was going near the room.  It is possible that she's rejecting the kittens... keep a close eye on them.  Does she still feed them, wash them, etc?  If not, then you'll have to take over bottlefeeding them, which is a gross business, because you have to stimulate their bottoms with a washcloth in order for them to p**p and pee.  But pay attention... does she acknowledge that she has kittens?  If you pick one up and it cries out, does she come running in?  Your vet can suggest more things to do if she is rejecting them.

Also, I suggest getting her fixed, which is cheaper in the long run, especially if she's going to form a habit of ignoring her kittens.

  8. My cat had kittens and she did the same thing. She was too young to have them and they ended up dying.  Keep a close eye on them

  9. i would keep a eye on her.as long as she is feeding the kittens and looking after them.she might just wanna stretch her legs.she probably knows they are safe so feels content about leaving them alone.but if she stops looking after them then u should step in.
