Question:

Cat warm and sluggish after multiple vaccinations...

I took my cat to the vet 7/29. She had to be sedated for her groom, and they also gave her FeLV, FIV, and Rabies (although i didn't ask for rabies and she is an inside cat and I think she had one 1.5yrs ago anyways). She had a lot of hair shaved (she had gotten matted from over grooming)

She was hot last night but today she is warm and the tips of her ears are cool (i was thinking she'd be cold from having so much fur taken off, she's super long hair, but she isn't shivering and i have the air on 79F.), and sluggish. But she has a healthy appetite, is drinking her water, moves around, her eyes don't look out of it, and she uses the bathroom.

I've had lots of shots at once and i know I felt bad for days afterward. Is it the same with my kitty? She is middle aged so I'm thinking that's a factor. The vet said i could bring her back to have more fluid injected, but going to the doctor and car rides terrify her and i don't want to add extra stress.

Am I being overly worried? 48 hours haven't past yet... Should I just let her rest and work it out her system? I'm giving her consequin for any joint stiffness she may have. Any other cat parents out there who can share their experience?

  1. sounds like she is just having a vaccine reaction. call up the vet you took her to and see what they say, some vets like to give a medication for that, and some just have you wait it out and watch her real close.

  2. You are not being too cautious! Many cats have bad reactions to vaccines. If you have an indoor cat, you do not need yearly shots, although the vets will recommend them. All of my cats have received the initial shots, but I will not allow them to receive any more (they are strictly indoor).

Keep a very close eye on your cat for any problems.

  3. By now the sedative should have worn off.  Her body is coping with a lot all in one go and it may be a reaction to that.  She's eating and drinking etc which are good signs.  Phone your vet clinic (where the shots were done) and explain your cat is behaving in this way.  They'll be able to tell you whether to take her in or whether it's safe to let her rest and recover without further treatment.

By the way, where cats have been shaved, their skin is warmer than most people realise :)

  4. No, you're not overly worried. Please call your vet.
