It's a cat.  Even if they really did understand human language, they are going to ignore you anyway.  That's what cats do.

I feel you, my cats never listen to me try to call him or her by something it can relate too like for me i say to one of my cats kitty instead of its real name call your cat by something it likes to do or how it behaves that is what i do and it works!!!

awww im lucky, my baby is sweeeeet! he comes running to me even if i call him from the other room. I would say Gucci, looking for him and he would come out of his hiding and look at me with the "here i am mommy" expression :D

Well cats are supposed to be bossy. i would suggest whenever you call his name make sure you have a treat ready. do this for a few weeks and he will come to you when you call him even without treats. make sure your voice is a bit pitch-y/shrilly. cats don't like low pitched voices. you might have noticed that when cats are upset or angry they make low grumbling voices and if you call they with a low base-y voice they feel threatened/defensive/unsure (whatever you prefer), which is the reason they like pitch-y voices with singsong-y tones :D
