Catalan Dragons stun St Helens – Super League round-up
The Catalan Dragons produced one of the biggest shocks in Super League history on Friday evening, as the team who are propping up the division beat last year’s runners-up St Helens 30-20 at the GPW Recruitment Stadium.
Three tries in an incredible 10-minute spell in the first half by the Dragons was enough to secure only their second win of the season. Clint Greenshields was the standout player for the visitors, crossing over twice and marshalling a sterling defensive effort against the hosts. Despite dominating second-half possession, St Helens could not break down the Dragons' defensive wall. The result leaves third-placed St Helens cut further adrift of the top of the table, as the top two both managed to register victories.
Wigan lead the way still, as Darrell Goulding grabbed a hat-trick and Pat Richards kicked 10 perfect goals in their 60-10 demolition of Salford, who had Ryan Boyle sent off after just 21 minutes.
Warrington Wolves’ 54-30 victory over Castleford cemented their place in second, meaning that Wigan’s lead is still only four points at the top. The Wolves have now won seven of the last eight games and with their big players such as Richie Myler, who scored a hat-trick against Castleford, and Ben Westwood, both hitting top form, Tony Smith’s side could prove to be the main challengers to the current league leaders.
The top two are set to clash on Friday, which is all set up to be a mouth-watering encounter.
Leeds Rhinos’ season, which looked to be moving in the right direction following a poor start, came off the rails once again on Friday. The reigning champions were completely out-played by Hull KR, and suffered a 25-6 defeat, meaning Rovers completed a league double over the Rhinos’ for the first time in 25 years.
Three first-half tries were enough to maintain the mid-summer momentum that has brought Rovers nine points from six matches which has now lifted them to sixth in the league. Their ambitions of a play-off place look to be becoming more realistic week by week.
Leeds, however, stay in fifth and now trail Wigan by 11 points.
Other results;
Harlequins RL 35 – 18 Bradford
Wakefield 29 – 6 Hull
Huddersfield 30 – 12 Crusaders
