Before heading into next week, Barcelona presented themselves in front of the press as the young Barca B players, who were to speak about their experiences.
The players that talked included midfielders Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano, along with Jose Manuel Pinto and Victor Vazquez. The very young centre-back, Andreu Fontas, also spoke about his experience in the first team and his first ever UEFA Champions
League game.
The first team centre-back Gerard Pique had a lot to say about the midweek game. The young Spaniard had the opportunity to become the captain of the team for the first time in his career with Barcelona.
Gerard Pique is also a product of the Barcelona youth academy La Masia but the only difference between him and the other La Masia and Barcelona first team players was the fact that he joined the English club Manchester United while the others stuck to the
Spanish side. However, Gerard Pique did make a return to his old club and he did manage to shine with his former team mates as he and the captain of the Barcelona team, Carles Puyol are considered the best pair in the centre-back position.
Gerard Pique also had a few words to talk about the game that took place during the midweek against the Russian Giants Rubin Kazan. The captain spoke about his experience with the youngsters as he stated that he could simply relate to each and every one
of them. He admitted the fact that he used to be usual player like every Barca B player and it was with the help of the new Spanish coach Josep Guardiola that he got the opportunity to play in the first team to show his skill at the back.
The Spanish centre-back was very straight about his comments and after thanking the fifty five thousand fans who became a part of the crowd during the game he accepted that the game was quite bromidic. He admitted that their side did not feel confident enough
during the first half to penetrate through the Russian defence because the opposition were simply very well organised. He also spoke about the atmosphere in the stadium and appreciated how the fans chanted for their side and he was happy about the fact that
their side got the result and did not disappoint anyone.
He later spoke about the importance of the game for him as he said that it was the first time he was captaining the Barcelona side. The Spanish centre-back felt proud of his position on the pitch as he felt like a leader and helped all the young guns who
featured on the pitch. He said that he supported Barcelona since he was a child and it was definitely an honour to captain a side that he always wanted to be a part of.
He later explained why they played so many passes during the first half and could not really make something creative. He stated that the Russian side were defending extraordinarily well and by moving the ball around the team was trying to shake the defenders
off and soon when they managed to, they actually did find the back of the net. He showed great respect for the Russian defence and said that they did a good job.
Moreover, he also appreciated the Barcelona youth system who were able to provide no less than 10 Barca B players during the UEFA Champions League game. He said that “La Masia” are doing a fabulous job and he congratulated them for it.
Gerard Pique also talked about the Ballon d’Or finalists, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and Lionel Messi and when he was asked who his favourite was, he simply said that he loves all the three superstars. He stated that all of them are out of the world
and if he could, he would divide the award into three to give it to all three of them.
Pique also spoke about the scorer of the second goal Victor Vazquez. He said that it was a memorable moment for him because they used to play together when they were young and it was nice to see him in the first team.
