Catalina Castano dumps Lenka Wienerova in the qualifiers – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Colombian contender, Catalina Castano, eased past the Slovakian rising star, Lenka Wienerova, in straight sets in the qualifying competition at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Sunday. She nudged up a 7-5, 6-4 victory against the 23-year-old to book a
spot in the final round of the qualifiers at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) event held on the clay courts in Acapulco, Mexico.
The Colombian veteran brought her experience into handy to oust the world number 260 in their second meeting. The contestants previously met each other at the qualifying competition of this tournament in 2010 and after earning this success, Castano maintained
her winning record.
Ranked 292nd in the WTA rankings, Castano made a nervy entry at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess and went 3-0 down after losing her opening two serves. Despite recovering in the following game, she lost her serve again and eventually trailed at
1-5. However, the experienced Colombian went on a six games killing spree and pulled out the opener by winning seven games to five.
The 32-year-old carried her winning momentum into the following set and after breaking the Slovak’s serve in the fourth game, she went 3-1 up. Regardless of losing her serve twice and trailing at 3-4, she unleashed her skills again and wiped out the last
three games in a row, consequently clinching the set with a 6-4 score line.
Overall, the former world number 35 re-ignited her 2006 spark in this match. She spilled more errors and produced a lower first serve share of 54 percent as opposed to the Wienerova’s 66 percent but amazingly clicked 21 out of 37 points on it. The Colombian
also converted seven out of 11 break opportunities to her advantage.
Castano will square off against her compatriot, Mariana Duque-Marino, who slaughtered the Spanish contestant, Ines Ferrer Suarez, with a bagel to set-up this clash. Duque-Marino lost her serve once in the match but broke the Spaniard’s serve six times to
seal the match with a 6-2, 6-0 score line in 68-minutes.
Fifth seeded Sesil Karatantcheva will accompany the Colombian in the final round of this qualifying competition. She lost her track in the second set but outclassed Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) success. The Kazakh sought 20 break opportunities
and converted seven to her advantage. She also clobbered a higher first serve share of 70 percent as compared to the Dutch’s 57 percent and impressively marked 44 out of 76 points on it.
