I have a 2001 Chevrolet Metro LSI, it has 97K miles, sometimes when I crank it up, it smokes just a little bit for a second or two...then sometimes, when I am driving it, it starts to smell like the rotten eggs smell, so I know it has to deal with the catalytic converter, but is it something that I need to worry about????

  1. Smoke is fine for a few seconds, but while driving its bad. no matter what color, bule, black, or white.

now the smell of rotten eggs maybe coming from your battery. Batteries tend to have a reall y bad smell when they're going bad, have that checked out.

why do u suspect your catalyc converter?

  2. i would say change that cat,if not in the long run your valves will get carboned up and its really gonna start to run crappy

  3. It is very important that you deal with this issue. many things can happen when a converter fails. first when is clogs it will create a surplus of exhaust back pressure which could damage your engine. second if it clogs too much the internal temperature will climb and it could result in a fire.

  4. White smoke when first started is normal. If white smoke continues you have an internal coolant leak, i.e., cracked head/blown head gasket. Black smoke is caused by a rich fuel condition. Blue smoke is caused by oil consumption. The smell of coolant inside your car is caused by a leaking heater core.
