Question:

Catalytic Converter?

My check engine light came on. I took it to autozone and they did a diagnostic on it. It came up with a code saying that my catalytic converter is bad. It seems like an easy replacement, but will the replacement make my check engine light go off automatically if its fixed, or will I have to get it reset? and where?

  1. When you change the catalytic converter, if they don't reset the codes at that time, the light should go off in about 40-60 miles, when the computer realizes that it is no longer an active fault. It will still be listed as an inactive, or passive fault until it is cleared by a mechanic.

  2. after you get it replaced, you have to have the codes erased.

  3. If that is what is causing your fault, then all you will need to do is take it back to autozone and they can clear you fault, or if you have someone change the cat then, they maybe able to clear it for you.

  4. You can reset it by removing the positive battery cable for about half an hour.  When you replace it, start the car, and the light should be off.
