The engine malfunction light of my mazda626 LX was on.I took it to the mechanic and they read the code and asked me to replace the catalytic converter, the price quote for which was $1000.It is too steep for a student like me.Can anyone give me advice as to what is the best possible way to get this fixed?

  1. Best advice I can give you is to have the cat replaced somewhere.

  2. Go o your local muffler shop. They have replacements and usually are cheaper than the dealer. Dont waste your money on a used one it may be junk also..............UJN

  3. you will have to pay the money to get it fixed. you cant even get a used one as scrap prces for them have also gone through the roof.

  4. Where did you get the diagnosis done? Did you go to a dealer? Are they giving you a stock parts price?  Call around at some aftermarket parts dealers and see what their price is for one.  Stock parts are always hugely expensive and dealer garages don't understand the word budget.

Your other alternative is to try and find one in a junkyard, but chances are not so good as most junkyards are now removing them from cars immediately to scrap them.  Frankly, they must as if they don't, someone else will get in their yard and do it for them.

Ask around with different garages and get a price for putting one on and ask if they know where you can get a used one.
