Catania edge out Genoa 2-1 to extend the gap from danger zone – Serie A update

The first half started at a rapid pace, as the hosts applied early pressure. The first goal scoring opportunity of the game fell to the visitors in the fifth minute, when Floro Flores made a darting run into the box and chested the ball down to force a beautiful
save from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mariano-c23890 Andujar. Catania enjoyed a decent spell of possession and looked to make inroads. The hosts came extremely close to scoring in the 15th minute, when Francesco Lodi’s shot from a 25 yards free kick went whiskers away from the upright
post. The visitors took the lead in the 19th minute. Catania keeper, Andujar, spilled a comfortable ball and Flores slotted home from close range, to make it 1-0 for Genoa. The game continued at a blistering pace, as both teams created a flurry
of chances. The visitors should have doubled their lead before the half time whistle but Flores headed just wide of the goal from Marco Rossi’s pinpoint cross from the flank.
The second half witnessed a rollicking start, as the hosts drew level in the 51st minute. Maxi Lopez finished from close range after a mess was created from a free kick. Four minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead through Bergessio. The long
free kick left the Genoa defence chasing shadows and Bergessio was given two attempts to fire home from 18 yards and make it 2-1 for the hosts.

Augustyn was saved further embarrassment when Andujar stopped the penalty and denied Genoa the equalizer. Both teams came close to scoring but the hosts held onto a slender lead and won the game 2-1.
