Catania’s Maxi Lopez will not go to Manchester United – Agent
Catania’s Maxi Lopez was enjoying an inspired form last season following his January transfer from FC Moscow. The former Barcelona forward scored impressive 12 goals in just 17appearances. His exploits meant Catania was able to avoid relegation.
His string of impressive performances had the scouts from European heavyweights on their toes, as a potential summer transfer was on cards. Lopez however, decided to stay loyal to the Rossazzurri cause by staying with the club. The striker’s agent, Dario
Bombini, has come out in the press recently and thinks the striker will leave the club in the future. Manchester United however, is an unlikely destination.
His striking form was reported to have impressed the Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson but the player’s agent has dismissed the rumours, “I have no knowledge of Manchester United following Maxi Lopez. I have not been contacted by Manchester United so far.”
The agent insists his client is happy and settled in the Peninsula, “Lopez has settled well in Italy, and he enjoys a healthy relationship with the Catania boss, Marco Giampaolo.” Bombini continues. “He is pleased with the management and the support that
he gets from the fans. The striker has found his scoring touch again. He hopes to score more than ten goals this season. The ultimate objective is to get a national team call-up for Argentina.”
Maxi Lopez along with Javier Saviola was another player on the long list of youngsters to have been touted the ‘Next Maradona’. Lopez made his senior debut with River Plate before FC Barcelona decided to sign the young sensation in 2005 for a reported fee
of 6.2 million Euros. Lopez failed to cement a first team place despite putting in some impressive performances. After an unsuccessful loan spell with RCD Mallorca, the striker was sold to FC Moscow in 2007. The Argentine has been reviving his career ever
since as a loan move to Gremio next year put him on the European radar once again.
Lopez was a constant pick in Argentina U-21 in the earlier part of the decade but a wealth of attacking talent competing for a first team place has left Lopez unable to make his International debut. Lopez is eligible for both the Azzurri and La Albiceleste.
Bombini further stated that a possible transfer in January or the summer next year will depend entirely on the will of Catania President Antonino Pulvirenti. Interest in the striker will be high, as the Argentine is just 26 years of age and has his best
years ahead of him.
