I have been my baseball teams starting catcher all season, but in practice yesterday i was fielding ground balls very well and the coach asked me if i wanted to make a permanent change to 2nd instead? Which position is better? Should i give up catching to play 2nd base?

  1. I play catcher on my team and I've been playing it for 5 years. It is very tough on the body and knees, but if you like being in the game, then catcher is right for you..........if you like fielding ground balls and turning double plays, then you'd do better at 2nd.

  2. you already have a number of good answers...i'd only add that your decision should be based on what you enjoy more, and if you have any idea about furthering your baseball life, it's a lock that catchers...good ones...are far more difficult to find than infielders...a number of pros learned to catch as well as play their natural positions because it gave them a better chance of getting a roster spot, and there have been quite a few major leaguers who would not have made it that far except that they could catch, at least in an emergency...

  3. playing 2nd base is much easier on the body i would give it a try

  4. Being a catcher is harder on your body than any other position except maybe a pitchers arm.  If you can work through this, you should know that a catcher will win more games for his team than most other positions except pitching.

Of course, you can lose more games for your team as well.

If you can tolerate the pain of catching, you should realize that your team has a better chance of winning with a good catcher than with any other player except a pitcher.  :)

  5. Go to 2nd base.  Never miss an opportunity to learn a new position.  There will be times when you experience stress because you are not sure what to do or you make a mistake.  Some day you may play on a team that has a better catcher than you and you will have experience playing another position.  In addition the 2nd base experience means that maybe you have the ability to play other infield or even outfield positions.  I have played since Little League and have played every position on the field at one time or another.

  6. 2nd

  7. Your coach must think you have a better chance of moving up in baseball at second then as a catcher. Catcher is a critical position and a coach would rarely encourage a good catcher to switch positions. He must think you will have more opportunity to play at the next level at 2nd base.
