Catching Mespirit in Pokemon Diamond?

Okay, I released Mespirt, and have been chasing him (it?) for a while now. I've got him down to like 3 HP left. I had trouble catching him then, so I decided to put him to sleep. I was sucessful, but the weird thing is, is it doesn't affect him. As soon as I had finished using hypnosis, he fled. His status still says SLP, but it's doing nothing. Do you have any suggestions?

Paralysis and confusion are a good combo to with.

Sleep is usually the best way though. Capturing a spinerak or ariados with "Spider Web" is another option.

get a pokemon with the move mean look and use it.  golbat can learn mean look. or a sudowoodo with the move block.  that way it will not flee.  then you can have more time campturing it.  and paralyzing mesprit would be better.  if you need more help go to gamefaqs.com
