  1. as she gets close place the leading rope over her neck that will then give you a bit more time to get the head collar on beacuse if she starts to walk away you still have hold of her with the lead rope... then gently and quickly put the head collar on.

    :):) good luck!

  2. A metal bucket with sweet feed ought to do it.  Helpful if your friend's horse is easy to catch...if your horse won't come, take the other one!  Your horse will follow and eventually you will be able to take her in too.

  3. Hide the headcollar behind your back and dont let it see it because if your horse see it it will immediatley think shes gonna catch me.. also try having a treat in your hand and coaxing it.

  4. put the lead rope around her head so you have a hold of her in till you got the halter on her

  5. Well good luck .....

but you want your mare to WANT to come to you, yes?   so food is only temporary - use it if you have to; but it is best to catch her and release her, ride her, groom her - shake up the routine if you can - so all she knows when she sees you is it is most likely you are going to do something pleasant with her.

I say do NOT hide anything behind you - then she will loose trust in you for other things and be thinking each time you hold out food if you are going ATTACK her and put her to work.

I walk right up to mine with the halter and lead rope hanging at my side - give her nose a scratch and then just put the halter on ...... sure a few times she has turned and walked off - I don't even say anything I SMILE, and walk right after her in a nice way - scratch her nose again ...... I have only had her walk away from me 4 times before she just gave in and let me halter her  - believe me - the time you put in walking behind her to do this "her way"  pays off in the long run.    I would say 90% of the time I can put the halter on the first nose scratch.

  6. Well you want a quick fix for tonite...not for the future so I hope maybe I can lend you some advice.

I don't make it a habit of cheating (treats) and lying (hiding the halter) to my horses so this is a tough one.

Halter in left hand, hanging by your side.

When your mare comes up to you take a step back but do not look into her eyes.  Reach out with your right hand that holds a cheat treat.  When she approaches put the leadline over her neck and grab the end. You make her feel 'caught' using the leadline around the neck.   Now halter her.

    Rub between the eyes.

dunno if this will work for you.  Every horse is different. It's nice to have a list of backups though!

    Good luck!

  7. be prepared, have your halter ready, i use the lead rope around neck first  up close to the ears then slip the halter on.

I carry it unbuckeled over my shoulder-slip lead over neck get the face up towards me and slip halter on nose and buckle it.

use food to catch her only when absolutely necessary. she will get in the habit of that and may not come to you if there are no goodies. maybe even try a soft whistle and a nice scratching when she comes willingly -she may learn to come to a whistle and save you the walk. good luck and congrats on the new friend.

  8. the hiding behind the back is good and with feed.   but why he is running is cuz he is not used to you and does not trust you.   you need to work withj him everyday... like if you have a round pen get him in there work with him everyday  run him around it teach him your personal voice commands. after this point after awhile he will want to be with you all the time, he will trust you... then when he is in the field instead of chasing him it will be to where he is excited to see you... he will want to be with you more and more    the more time you spend and work with him.. he will come to you.

  9. I like to get my horses in the habit of coming when called by always calling them when it's time for feeding. Eventually, they'll come to the call, even if there's no bucket. It's important to associate the call with the feed, not the halter, so be patient and if you find yourself getting frustrated, take a break for a while.

  10. Take a bucket with some feed in it with her halter set over the bucket so she has to put her nose into it to get to the feed, then you can just slip the halter over her ears.

If she's a hard to catch type, do this trick with a rope around the neck, as well as the halter, so you'll be able to control her while you settle the halter.

  11. loop your leadrope around her neck whilst u put her head collar on, so you can hold onto her if she does move, goodluck!
