Question:

Catching kittens?

So far my sister has caught 2 of 20 kittens she found. There are some 4 weeks old and some about 7 weeks old. They all have eye infections and one is missing an eye. There are 4 adult cats. I'm going to help as soon as I can ditch work. If we don't get them all today what are the chances of them moving somewhere else? We don't know if they are ferals or if they were dumped. The younger kittens are coming to the wet food but the adults and older kittens are not.

  1. I think Catz is right, if you just leave the food out, they will stay there.  Probably eat it when you are not around.  Just make sure the canned food it super smelly, you know they can't resist and then you may want to try those humane traps.  Maybe the local humane society or animals control has some you can borrow?  Wish I was closer.  I have nothing to do now that I'm unemployed and would LOVE to help.  I have experience with orphaned skunks, I think I can handle kittens.  Oh, the little skunks kittens are SO adorable!  I actually took care of a rescued unreleasable orphaned skunk for the rest of his life. 8 weeks old when I got him!  Boy was he a pure sweetie pie!  Soft and cuddley.  Who woulda thought?

  2. Pawpaw said to kill them Mom.... lol, IDK..... the first chick might be right. Animal control might know what to do with them.... cause this is a BIG job. Catz has got a pretty good soundin idea too....

  3. It sounds that they may be feral if the adults will not come to you with the food. Your best bet is to set traps to catch the adults and the older babies that won't come to you. Tuna, mackerel, and sardines are the best bait. The younger ones will be taught very quickly by mama to stay away from you if they are ferals...so get the ones you can by hand asap. Your best bet is to wear some leather gloves...even if they will come to you, you may end up with a nasty bite or scratch.

If you set up a central feeding area that the cats become familiar with, the mamas won't move their babies too far away...unless they are being fed somewhere else. I know it doesn't solve the problem in a day but it is your best bet to get them all. Feed them at the same time of day for a few days. Then begin setting traps at the same time you would normally feed them. Sometimes you can borrow traps from animal control or the like.

I have so much info but not sure what all to put here. I work with a colony of 50 plus cats...Please e-mail with specific questions or more details of the situation and I would be glad to help.

Any of these babies that you do catch...take extra caution in bringing them near your own pets. URI can spread very quickly even if the kittens are not in the same room with your own...

  4. Call the ASPCA in your city/state. Alert a vet that can come on a house-call, and take them to where your sister found them.

As for not eating, try different food. Maybe actual meat from the deli. If they are ferals, then deli meat may seem more appealing to them.

Good luck! I hope they find good homes (:

  5. if you leave food out i think they wiill stay. my folks had about 2 dozen feral cats . they showed up when mom started feeding just one little black one that had showed up. all of a sudden a few more came, and they started having kittens. my folks live in a very residential neighborhood, they've lived there for 55 years and we've NEVER seen feral cats there before. but these were really wild. (they have 2 cats of their own, and caught 3 of the kittens when tiny so kept them too) anyway, we finally got a hold of a saint of a woman much like yourself, who simply through volunteering, came , set traps, and slowly over several weeks, was able to catch all but one male, who eventually disappeared when all of the others had been caught and "fixed". she felt bad about not catching him.  she has a regular job, but spends every free minute catching ferals, having them "fixed" and releasing them. and finding homes for adoptable ones.  despite seeing the traps (she always put a blanket over the traps to make them less scary) all of the cats always hung out in the backyard. probably because of the dependable food source. the volunteer was able to place many of the kittens in homes. 9 of them she released back at my folks, where they have wonderful wood houses my dad made for them. they're all happy, and are well fed. just no more kittens, thank God.  the rest of them the v. has living in her basement the last i heard. she NEVER has a cat euthanized just because it's feral or homeless. and she never rests until she has caught every last one she's after! anyway, this long story was just to say, yes, i'm sure they'll stay as long as they think food is there.

  6. Call animal control right away. They will catch the kittens for you. Hopefully some of the younger ones will be tamable still and will be adopted. If you leave even a few out there they will continue to breed and become more of a problem.

  7. Do you have a live trap, if not Tractor Supply sells them and they are wonderful.  Animal control may let you borrow theirs.  A Long Handled fishing net might work.  Thank you for helping these Kittens and cats!

  8. Good luck with catching them! This is sad!

  9. Call your local Cats Protection, and they should be able to help you with traps to catch the kittens and cats.  It sounds like they are feral cats, and when they are caught the CP will neuter them and return them, the kittens will hopefully be tamed and rehomed.

  10. I think this is a job for animal control.  I know you are trying to do your best, but this is a huge job and you could very quickly be overwhelmed.

Good luck and thank you for helping these cats!

  11. They could possibly move some where else, you could try a animal trap for the bigger cats. Maybe get a net that has a handle on it for the smaller ones and try to corner them and catch them.

    good luck

  12. I think you should call animal control. You really don't know if the cats are infected.
